Millennials are a hot topic and inquiring minds want to know....what sort of wine based events and winery functions are millennials most drawn to? What events do you like to attend and wish wineries offered more of? Do you attend events that tend to be more focused on wines or activity based? Working at a winery and being a millennial wine consumer I get a variety of answers so any feedback is much appreciated.
I think the obvious first answer is I'm looking for events that offer bang for my buck. The more wines I get to experience for the least amount of money the better. I, and I think many young people interested in wine, love food and the opportunity to taste wines along with foods specially prepared to pair with wines is a huge draw.
I'd also be attracted to events that offered a little something extra - a musical performance for example.
As a younger millennial, I'm more interested in the experience and friendly customer service. Nothing is worse than walking within a winery and automatically being put into a category. Engage me, offer different opportunities and experiences, present your wine with flare and leave stuffy opinions and assumptions aside.
Want a great event for millennials that eases the barrier? Then check out a hot, hot millennialtarget event called CRAVE - A Paso Robles Wine Experience. Really this event had everything that a millennial interested in wine could ask for - with no pretenses about how much wine knowledge you know or your expendable income. www.cravepaso.com.
The event encompassed 65 wineries pouring only one wine in nine varietal bars that was designed for beginning tasters to taste and determine which bars they like the best plus it had food pairings with each bar as well. I mean think about it: You get to go to a wine tasting and taste 65 wines plus food? Where can you really do that and not be pressured to purchase anything? Also, there was easy music and a comfy lounge.
Having been involved in a many large scale special events, I have witnessed a few unique things regarding events for the age group.
#1 Trying to get RSVPs is a nightmare. Even facebook and what not is disgustingly inaccurate for trying to estimate how many people.
#2 Its not about whats going on, but who. We have always gone after the guy who makes all the calls about going to the bars, typically if you can get him/her, you've got everyone else.
#3 Its all about the trends. Your location will always be more successful if people can tell their friends the next day where they went. Location, location, location.
