The Young Winos

Edutoxicating Los Angeles and Beyond since 2005

For those of you who don't know, Havens Wine Cellars in Napa Valley went bankrupt earlier in the year and liquidated all their stock (http://www.northbaybusinessjournal.com/15195/havens-billington-wine...). There are all sorts of deals around for buying Havens wines at deep deep discounts at retailers. Wines that used to sell for $30-50 or more are now $10-20.

Wine House in West LA is selling a lot of Havens Syrah, Merlot, and Bourriquot. I also noticed that http://wine.woot.com has been selling some Havens bottles, as well.

Get in on the action and buy some of these bargains before they're gone! Feel free to post any other leads you have on buying these wines.

On your recommendation, I snagged a bottle of the '05 Merlot at Wine House for only ten bucks (originally $35 or something). I opened it last night, and it drank really tremendously straight out of the bottle, with only minimal opening up... full body, smooth, moderate tannins and a touch of acidity providing some real backbone. Good stuff!

I'm drinking a glass of the same bottle right now, 24 hours later, and it's still solid (I vacu-pumped it and put it in the fridge overnight). The nose is really rich: black licorice, unsweetened chocolate, some dark plum. The palate is full of the same flavors, medium-full body, silky texture. There's an unfortunate spicy biting thing going on right after you swallow it, which I don't remember from yesterday, but that probably has to do with being open for a day. The finish is still long and very present.

In terms of Merlot in general, I'd posit that $10 is a good price for this bottle. For a Napa Merlot, however, it's definitely a steal.
