I'm not a big fan of petite, but Switchback Ridge, Ridge, and Outpost make some good ones. If you can find an older Ridge or Dunn, pick it up as they pick up quite a bit of complexity with age.
I recently went to a petite sirah tasting where we went through 60 of the wines. It was miserable and I felt like my tongue was going to fall off :) These wines really beg for a fatty steak.
Earthquake Petite Sirah is pretty good just like their entire lineup of cabs, zins, and syrahs. Big berry-like tastes, woody, lots of tannin, and very staining. Overall, pretty damn good for $27.
I am a fan of the Foppiano PS and the Spellbound for value. In WA state we have Thurston Wolfe Petite that rocks if you can find it. The guy has a Phd in grape genetics from UC Davis and is growing Cali varietals in WA. drop me a line if you cant find it. MD
